Talk about a dream job!
In August of 2017, Joey Burgess asked me to curate video content for his new Seattle bar, queer/bar. Less than two months later, the bar opened featuring my installation made up of 21 hours of content made up of over 400 unique clips.
Joey’s goal with queer/bar was to create a space for all kinds of queer people, so I tried my best to select clips that reflect the diversity and shared experiences of the queer community. Major categories included Gay, Lesbian, Genderqueer, Divas and Camp but the best clips were ones that included more than one category simultaneously. Most clips don’t last longer than five minutes and they’re stitched together using six different “queer/bar” logo-inspired transitions I created in After Effects.
One of the first clips Joey suggested was from Hitchcock’s The Birds, so I knew right away that I didn’t have to only select clips that were queer in the most obvious, superficial way. Some of my selections were editorial. For instance, I superimposed clips of Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding ice skating, just for fun.
In the future, I’d love to feature more locally produced queer content or even commission original content. Thanks to Joey for giving me this amazing opportunity to be a visual DJ!
