Biting into The Nosh's Season 2
The main reason for moving on from my position as lead editor for Mossback’s Northwest was to help develop new shows at Cascade PBS, namely our new art show Art by Northwest as well as The Nosh with Rachel Belle.
The first season of The Nosh was produced this time last year and, due to a family emergency, I wasn’t able to be as involved with the show’s first four episodes as I would have liked (with the exception of designing the main title animation). So I was excited when the new season of The Nosh began post-production earlier this year and I was able to dive head-first into fine-tuning the show’s second season.
What I like about both of these shows is how they each reflect the very different sensibilities of our hosts. Art by Northwest’s host Brangien Davis’s quiet, contemplative vibe is in direct opposition to Rachel’s effervescent personality and it’s fun to edit the shows so that they reflect those different characters.
One of the biggest challenges for Rachel’s show is the slightly chaotic crosstalk when people talk simultaneously, a common source of frustration for editors. Yeah, sure, it’s easier to edit on-camera conversations when each speaker takes turns, but in this first episode, Rachel and her guest Joel Gamoran are just so excited to exchange ideas and often finish each other’s sentences - much like the back and forth featured in Rachel’s Your Last Meal podcast. Instead of avoiding this chaos, I thought it was best to embrace it and make it a feature of the show instead of trying to untangle it.
I also love the challenge of conveying this episode’s step by step dish creation. Needless to say, I will be trying it out when I have some old asparagus on hand! Bon appétit.
Originally, these first two episodes were going to be just one episode about zero waste, but both stories were too good for just half an episode. In this episode, Rachel visits the headquarters of ice cream creator Tyler Malek, co-founder of Salt N’ Straw. My favorite part of this episode is the section where Tyler and Rachel are deciding which food to use in their ice cream creation. These kinds of verite scenes are so fun to edit.
